March ushers in an exciting Meet the Brewers (MTB) night when San Francisco brewers not only come together to mix and mingle at Black Sands Brewery from 6-9pm, but at 7pm, the City’s first free “hop on, hop off” Drink SF Beer shuttle officially launches as a permanent companion to these monthly gatherings.

For this “Haight / Sunset Line,” shuttles depart from Black Sands looping to Magnolia Brewpub, Barrel Head Brewhouse, Sunset Reservoir Brewing and Social Kitchen & Brewery before returning for another round. Three separate shuttles will be operating, ensuring easy access and frequent stops.

Black Sands will be rolling out some special beer releases to celebrate this evening of firsts:

Oil as Embers, Coffee Milk Stout with Cocoa Nibs – on NITRO!
This coffee milk stout gets its big, lush flavors thanks to 10 pounds of lactose, 10 pounds of organic coco nibs and 5 pounds of SF’s own De la Paz Big City coffee. Big roasty malts build the foundation of this beer with a full body, massive coffee flavors and aroma followed by a dry finish. Using nitro to dispense this beer ups the lusciousness quotient by ridiculous amounts.

Midnight Rye, Black Rye IPA, 6.5% ABV
Black Sands took their Son of Man American black ale and added 10 pounds of chocolate rye, 10 pounds of pale rye, and 10 pounds of flaked rye to the mash, resulting in this supped up black rye. The added grains up the spice character adn provide a more complex malt flavor, yet the brew is still dark and roasty, and, having been dry hopped with three pounds of Citra and three pounds of Cascade for balanced aroma, delivers a more distinct hop bitterness.

Ghost Town Brewery Collaboration Beer, Red Double IPA, 7.2% ABV
This collaboration brew with Ghost Town Brewery out of Oakland features Red X malt and red wheat. Nugget provides an appropriate bitterness for the double IPA style, and Galaxy and Mosaic are added to the boil for flavor, then again in equal parts to dry hopp the beer. Black Sands describes the flavor profile as: Fruit punch mixed with Tahitian treat (you know that soda pop drink?). Nice ruby red color and big juicy tropical fruit flavors. Defiantly a new school IPA.

SMaSH IPA featuring 100% Simcoe hops and 100% Vienna malt.
Beer geeks know when a beer uses only one hop and only one malt, it’ll be a SMaSH. Last year, Black Sands held a SMaSH homebrew competition in collaboration with the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild, and this winner, from Keith Kost, uses 100% Vienna malt with 100% Simcoe hops resulting in a pretty big single IPA with a balanced malt profile with layering hop flavor and aromas. Kost, very accomplished homebrewer, has won many awards and was the 2015 Sierra Nevada homebrewer of the year, so you know this is one beer you’ll really want to try.

Things get started at 6pm on Wednesday, March 16, so join members of the San Francisco Brewers Guild at Black Sands, then hop on a shuttle and make a night of learning about all the great breweries in the Haight and Sunset neighborhoods.
